Designing with intention instead of trends

Trends are useful as vocabulary and dangerous as strategy. The work that still reads well in five years is almost always the work that could explain itself — every choice traceable back to a reason rather than a reference.

Borrowed style means borrowed meaning

It dates the moment it lands

When a visual choice is made because it is current rather than because it is right, the brand inherits someone else’s reasoning. It looks contemporary for a season and unmoored after that.

Ask what the decision is doing

Every element should be able to answer a question: what does this help someone understand, find, or feel? Elements that cannot answer are decoration, and decoration is the first thing to date.

Intention survives redesigns

A design built on a clear point of view can absorb new trends without losing itself. The surface can move; the logic underneath stays put.

That is what makes intentional work cheaper over time. You are not rebuilding the argument each season — you are only updating how it is expressed.

So before adopting the next visual language, ask: Would this choice still make sense if the trend disappeared tomorrow?
